Lawyer for Donald Sterling’s girlfriend V. Stiviano says she doesn’t know who leaked the tape, is ‘devastated’ it got out

An attorney for V. Stiviano, the woman at the center of the Donald Sterling scandal, said she had permission to record the Clipper’s owner and doesn’t know who leaked the tape to TMZ.

Calabasas lawyer Mac Nehoray declined to state the purpose of the recording, but said it was “by mutual agreement.”

“My client is devastated that this got out,” he said, adding that he and Stiviano “have an idea” who released it. He declined to identify that person.

“Someone released it for money,” he said.

Stiviano recorded the rants that led to Sterling’s banishment from professional basketball and said through her attorney that she was never his mistress.

Contrary to some media reports, Stiviano was not in a romantic relationship with Sterling, her attorney said.

“It’s nothing like it’s been portrayed,” Nehoray said. “She’s not the type of person everyone says.”

Stiviano stepped outside her home several times Tuesday and always had her face covered with a tinted visor. The media hounded her with questions but she refused to answer until the remark about being president.

Stiviano often sat courtside with Sterling at Clippers games and is still reeling from the release of the recording in which he chastises her for associating with African Americans, including Magic Johnson, her attorney said.

She recorded the conversation, Nehoray said, but had no role in providing the damaging tape to TMZ, the website that first broke the story. The conversation occurred at her home in September in the presence of another person and Sterling knew he was being recorded, Nehoray added.

He also said Stiviano and the 80-year-old Clippers owner never had a sexual or romantic relationship and that descriptions of her as his mistress in the media and in a lawsuit filed by Sterling’s wife were erroneous.

Rochelle Sterling, who has been married to Donald Sterling for more than 50 years, filed suit against Stiviano in March in an effort to reclaim a $1.8-million apartment, luxury autos and cash he gave her.

The suit asserts that Stiviano instigated a sexual relationship with the Beverly Hills billionaire after they met at the 2010 Super Bowl. He was the latest in a string of rich men she had seduced, the suit contends.

Nehoray said those claims were false.

“She had no association with any rich people before this,” he said.

Nehoray said Sterling’s wife was friendly with Stiviano and was aware he had purchased an apartment for her.

Rochelle Sterling’s attorneys did not return calls and emails requesting comment.

Sterling was banned for life Tuesday by the NBA for the remarks attributed to him in the recording.

With paparazzi tracking her every move, V. Stiviano roller-skated in her driveway Tuesday and said she wanted to be president.

“One day, I will become president of the United States of America and I will change the legislation and laws,” Stiviano said in one of several odd encounters with media camped outside her home. “Modern day history. Civil rights movement.”

Crist leads latest poll by 10 points over Scott

HAMDEN, Conn. –

Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is leading the most recent polls as he runs for his former office against current Gov. Rick Scott.

Crist, who is running as a Democrat but previously served in the post as a Republican, has a 10-point lead over Scott, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released early Wednesday. It found 48 percent of Floridians prefer Crist, compared to Scott’s 38 percent.

Scott has trailed behind Crist for months in the polls. In late January, he was eight points behind; in November, seven points behind. Florida voters also say 53-39 percent that Scott does not deserve reelection.

It appears female voters are responsible for Crist’s lead. Women back Crist 51-33 percent; men back Crist 44-43 percent.

“Florida voters think former Gov. Crist is more compassionate, more honest, and trustworthy and was a better governor than Gov. Scott,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University poll. “The difference may be simple: Voters like Crist, whose strength always has been his ability to connect. Voters sometimes elect candidates they don’t like personally, but not that often.”

More than 50 percent of voters polled are not bothered by Crist’s shift in political views, from Republican to Independent and now to Democrat. Fifty-two percent of voters, including 60 percent of registered independents, believe his shift in party affiliation shows he is pragmatic. Alternatively, 40 percent believe it shows Crist has no core beliefs.

Scott recently launched a series of television ads to promote his reelection campaign.

“So far, Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s television barrage apparently has had no impact on the race,” said Brown. “The incumbent has not been able to reduce former Gov. Charlie Crist’s lead.”

Quinnipiac University conducted the poll from April 23 to April 28, questioning 1,413 registered voters. The margin of error is +/- 2.6 percentage points.

Minimum wage bill is blocked

Reid: GOP Protecting Koch’s With Wage Block

Minimum Wage Bill Halted in the Senate

Democratic legislation to raise the federal minimum wage hit a road block Wednesday when Republicans blocked the bill in the Senate, setting up an election-year battle over which party can best grow the economy and help struggling Americans.

The 54-42 vote was six votes shy of the 60 needed to advance the legislation that would gradually up the minimum wage from $7.25 per hour to $10.10 over the span of 30 months. The bill also included increases based on inflation that, if fully implemented, would allow a family of three to earn an annual income above the poverty line.

Republicans argue the bill will hurt small business owners, which may need to cut jobs to account for the higher wages. They cite a study released by the Congressional Budget Office released in February that found, while helping to alleviate poverty, raising minimum wage would cost the country about 500,000 jobs.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said the vote was “all about politics” and aimed at making the GOP look “hard-hearted.”

Democrats, fighting to keep control of the Senate ahead of November’s midterm elections, have sought to portray GOP opposition as evidence Republicans are ignoring struggling Americans.

“Their vote today clearly indicates they have problems way bigger than anything they acknowledge in retreats or autopsies,” Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said after the vote. “Their vote today defines their priorities.”

President Barack Obama has made the issue a priority and planned to speak about its importance Wednesday afternoon.

NBA owners’ committee to hold 1st meeting Thursday to discuss removal of Donald Sterling as owner of Los Angeles Clippers

NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA owners’ advisory/finance committee will hold a meeting Thursday to discuss the next steps in the removal of Donald Sterling as owner of the Los Angeles Clippers.

The 10-member committee will have a conference call two days after Commissioner Adam Silver banned Sterling for life from the league and fined him $2.5 million for making racist comments. Silver also said he would urge owners to use their power to force Sterling to sell the team.

That would require the support of three-fourths of the league’s owners in a vote. Silver said Tuesday during a news conference that he was confident he had the votes, which appears true given the numerous statements of support that were released by teams.

Minnesota owner Glen Taylor chairs the committee, which also includes Miami’s Micky Arison, the Lakers’ Jeanie Buss, Oklahoma City’s Clay Bennett, New York’s James Dolan, Boston’s Wyc Grousbeck, San Antonio’s Peter Holt, Phoenix’s Robert Sarver, Indiana’s Herb Simon, and Toronto’s Larry Tanenbaum.
