House committee holds Eric Holder in contempt

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans have escalated a high-profile clash with President Barack Obama in a case of a botched gun-running investigation by voting to hold his attorney general in contempt.

A majority Republican committee in the House of Representatives voted Wednesday to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for failing to turn over Justice Department documents.

The straight party-line vote was 23-17.

The vote followed a decision by Obama earlier in the day to assert the rarely-used power of executive privilege for the first time in his administration in order to protect the confidentiality of the documents  Source

In audio of police call, Trayvon Martin’s father worries about his son

SANFORD, Fla. — Before 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was shot in a gated community here, and before 28-year-old George Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder in Martin’s death more than six weeks later – before the protests in between, and before the anguish – there was a confused father worried for his son’s whereabouts.   In police recordings provided to NBC News under a freedom of information law, Trayvon’s father, Tracy Martin, speaks with Sanford police the morning after his son was shot and killed.    Click here to listen to police dispatch calling Tracy Martin back

Tracy Martin is unaware of what’s happened and calls to ask if he can file a “missing persons report.”

“I’m from Miami. And my son’s up here with me,” Martin can be heard saying, adding, “He don’t know anybody up here.”
Father and son are from Miami Gardens – outside the city – but the two had traveled to Sanford to visit with Tracy Martin’s girlfriend.
“Do you know the address?” the dispatcher asks.

“What’s the address, baby?” Martin can be heard saying – presumably to his girlfriend.

Martin goes on to say he hasn’t seen his son since 8 or 8:30 the prior night.

The call to police was placed at 8:39 a.m. Feb. 27, according to the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sanford Police Department called Martin back sometime later, asking for details about his son. Does his son have a driver’s license?

“No, he don’t,” Mr. Martin says.

“Ok, does not have a DL,” the dispatcher says. “And is he white, black, or Hispanic?”

“He’s black,” Martin says  Asked if Trayvon knows anyone in the area whose house he might have gone to, Martin says no.

“I have a nephew up here,” Martin says, “but he’s not at my nephew house. He hasn’t been over there, either.”

“OK, alright then,” the dispatcher says. “The officers are already on the way. I just want to get a little further – in case, you know, while they’re on the way they might spot him so we can let them know.”

But police, of course, do not find Trayvon. His body, though not yet identified, had been recovered from the scene of the shooting the night before.

Trayvon reportedly was watching NBA basketball on TV on the evening of Feb.26, then walked to a 7-Eleven store to pick up some Skittles and a canned drink.

As the teenager returned from the convenience store, he and neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman crossed paths inside the gated community, and sometime later a fight ensued.

Though several witnesses told law enforcement they saw and heard portions of the fight, no witness so far has said with certainty what happened throughout.

How the fight between Trayvon and Zimmerman ended is by now well-known – and left only one of those two men alive.

Trayvon was killed when Zimmerman fired his Kel-Tec 9mm handgun at the teenager – shooting him through the heart, according to autopsy reports.

Zimmerman was charged on April 11 with second-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty.

Sanford police officers have said Zimmerman claimed on the night of the shooting that he acted in self-defense. Teams of investigators reached varying conclusions on Zimmerman’s claim, which delayed an arrest. A special prosecutor, Assistant State Attorney Angela Corey, was assigned on March 22.

George Zimmerman’s wife had $57,000 in account, records show

ORLANDO, Fla. — On the day George Zimmerman’s wife testified that she and her husband were broke, she had more than $57,000 in her individual credit union account, according to prosecution records.

Shellie Zimmerman, 25, is free on $1,000 bail, awaiting trial on perjury charges.

Prosecutors allege she lied when she testified at her husband’s bond hearing April 20 that the couple had no savings. Her husband is back in the Seminole County Jail, charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of an unarmed black 17-year-old, Trayvon Martin. Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester Jr. ordered his bond revoked, accusing him and his wife of deliberately misleading him about their ability to come up with bail money.

It’s not clear how much money the couple has now. Several weeks ago, defense attorney Mark O’Mara reported that a legal defense fund, started with $120,000 that the Zimmermans surrendered to him, had raised a total of $220,000 and was netting about $1,000 a day in contributions.

The fund is now being administered by a certified public accountant, who O’Mara said would use the money for George Zimmerman’s legal defense and living expenses.

Special Prosecutor Angela Corey on Monday released a limited number of the couple’s financial records, portions of his-and-hers credit union accounts.

They show that a few days after Zimmerman set up a website, inviting people to make credit card donations to him via PayPal, he began to transfer PayPal money to his own credit union account.

But he was arrested and jailed April 11, cutting off his direct access to the money. A series of recorded jail phone calls, released by the special prosecutor Monday, reveal that he coached his wife on how to get access to it and gave very specific instructions on what she should do with it.

The day after he was jailed, big chunks of money, generally slightly less than $10,000, began to flow into and out of her account, according to prosecution records.

All told, during the week and a half that he was jailed in April, $85,000 flowed through her individual account, records show.  Source

NBA Finals: Heat defeats Thunder, 104-98, in Game 4

Miami’s LeBron James, right, looks to drive past Oklahoma City’s Thabo Sefolosha during Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Tuesday. (Robert Duyos / South Florida Sun-Sentinel / June 19, 2012)

MIAMI — In an implausible sequence spanning only a few minutes, LeBron James went from being carried off the court to carrying his team.

And now the Miami Heat finds itseslf one victory from hoisting a championship trophy.

Shrugging off a leg injury that forced him to depart Game 4 of the NBA Finals midway through the fourth quarter, James returned to make the three-pointer that put the Heat ahead in an eventual 104-98 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night at AmericanAirlines Arena.

Miami holds a 3-1 advantage in a best-of-seven series it can close out here Thursday night in Game 5.

There was already a party atmosphere in South Beach after James made the go-ahead three-pointer with 2 minutes 50 seconds left, providing the Heat a 97-94 lead.

James nearly finished with a triple-double, collecting 26 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds in 44 sublime minutes.

But James remained in such discomfort that he limped to the timeout huddle with 55 seconds left and stayed on the bench as Mario Chalmers drove for a scoop layup that gave the Heat a 101-96 cushion with 44 seconds to go.

Russell Westbrook, a game-long menace to Miami, made a driving layup to bring the Thunder to within 101-98 with 44 seconds left, but a subsequent jump ball ended up in the hands of Chalmers, who made two free throws to secure the Heat’s third consecutive triumph in the series.

Westbrook finished with 43 points on 20-for-32 shooting. He scored 11 consecutive points for the Thunder to start the fourth quarter amid an array of driving layups, floaters and pull-up jumpers.

It wasn’t enough.

Dwyane Wade and Chalmers had 25 points apiece for Miami, more than offsetting Kevin Durant’s 28 points for Oklahoma City.

James suffered his injury when he drove toward the basket and fell with 5:48 left. He rose and started to run gingerly back down the court before Wade blocked Derek Fisher’s layup, triggering a possession that ended in a short jumper by James.

But James could not gut it out for long, having to be carried off the court with 5:15 remaining. He kneeled on a pad along the baseline and was replaced by James Jones.

The crowd roared shortly thereafter as James walked to the scorer’s table to check back into the game with 4:05 to go and the Heat trailing, 94-92.

It was difficult to recall that Miami had trailed by as many as 17 points in the first quarter the way things veered sharply in its favor in the second.

The Heat made four three-pointers in the quarter and persevered through a frightening moment when Wade appeared to hurt his back.

Wade fell awkwardly after having his shot blocked by Serge Ibaka with 7 minutes 18 seconds before halftime. He crouched in anguish for several moments, holding his back, before dropping to his knees in along the baseline. He would stay in the game.

Heat 79, Thunder 75 (end of third quarter)

Miami could be 12 minutes from taking a commanding lead in the NBA Finals.

The Heat also could be that far away from another Game 4 meltdown.  Source
