At least three people were rushed to the hospital after a car transporter tractor trailer truck crashed into Simeon’s restaurant on the Ithaca Commons shortly after 4 p.m.
No conditions on the injured were yet available. Several injured people walked away from the scene and were taken to a nearby building and were being tended to by emergency medical personnel.
The Ithaca Fire Department had personnel inside the restaurant, perhaps trying to free the driver, and had a ladder truck on Aurora Street.
The truck was partially inside the restaurant. It was carrying several cars in its trailer, which extended from the restaurant into Aurora Street. The building appeared to be leaning slightly to the east toward Aurora Street. Emergency crews at the scene reported the building was unstable.
Multiple injuries have been reported. Medical helicopters have been called.
Police are advising motorists to avoid the area.
The loaded car transporter became embedded in the building, the entire tractor portion and part of car-laden trailer inside.
The carrier’s right-turn signal was still flashing, suggesting it had come down the State-MLK Street hill and failed to negotiate the right turn onto Aurora Street.
Cracks could be seen on the building’s facade up to the fourth floor, and portions of the interior of the second and third floors were visible.
Broken glass was on the northeast corner of Aurora and State-Martin Luther King Jr. Street in front of Viva Tacqueria restaurant.
