After promising to fight the NBA, Donald and Shelly Sterling have reportedly agreed to sell the Los Angeles Clippers.
According to ESPN and USA Today, Donald Sterling will voluntarily transfer his shares of the basketball team to his estranged wife, who will negotiate a forced sale of the team. The NBA’s Board of Governors has scheduled a vote on June 3 to force Donald Sterling to sell the club that he has owned since the early 1980s.
The NBA fined Sterling $2.5 million and imposed a lifetime banafter tapes in which he made remarkably racist comments to his assistant (and possibly girlfriend) surfaced on the internet.
Shelly Sterling, who has a stake in the team as well, had also promised to fight to hold on to partial ownership. Reports say that she plans on trying to maintain a minority stake in the team, but the NBA is adamant about purging all Sterling connections to the franchise.
