President Obama has a loyal supporter in George Clooney. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the politically minded Oscar winner abruptly exited a dinner with hotel and casino mogul Steve Wynn after the two had a heated argument over the commander-in-chief.
“He called the president a [rhymes with ‘glassbowl’] … that is a fact,” Clooney emailed the paper via his publicist. “I said the President was my longtime friend and then he said, ‘Your friend is [a glassbowl].’ … At that point I told Steve that HE was [a glassbowl] and I wasn’t going to sit at his table while he was being such a jacka–. And I walked out. There were obviously quite a few more adjectives and adverbs used by both of us. Those are all the facts.”
Concludes the A-lister, “It had nothing to do with politics and everything to do with character.”
This all happened during dinner two weeks ago at a restaurant inside Wynn’s Encore hotel. Clooney was in Sin City to promote his Casamigos tequila brand at the Wine &Spirits Wholesalers of America convention.
“There were nine people at that table … so you can ask them,” adds George. “Steve likes to go on rants.”
Indeed he does, because his version of events is, not surprisingly, quite different from George’s.
Wynn, a vocal Obama critic and generous GOP campaign donor, tells the paper that tempers flared after a CAA agent at their table told a joke about Mikhail Gorbachev, causing Clooney to have “a hissy fit.”
Things supposedly didn’t improve when the topic moved to healthcare reform.
“I think my discussion about the Affordable Care Act was the straw that broke the camel’s back,” he says. “When he’s drinking, he considers himself a close personal buddy of the president.”
Actually, Clooney can claim a pretty close relationship with the president, who two months ago hosted the actor and his “Monuments Men” co-stars at a White House screening of the movie.
“He is a good man, and a good friend,” Obama said of George in 2012. “A wonderful guy.”
In an ungentlemanly move, Wynn blamed the blow-up on Clooney’s downing of tequila shots, although considering he was in town to promote his hooch, doing shots seems like it would be a requirement.
According to Wynn, “He got up and said, ‘I don’t have to listen to this [expletive] stuff. … Clooney’s fun to be with when he’s sober. If you have a chance to drink with him, you want to get there early, and don’t stay late. Everybody who’s in my business, the casino business, knows to take actors with a grain of salt.”
