Gonzalez: Casey Anthony refused to answer deposition questions

Casey Anthony refused to answer “numerous” questions in a recent deposition by attorneys for a woman suing her for defamation, according to a new motion asking a judge to compel her to talk.

According to the motion filed by Zenaida Gonzalez’s lawyers, the deposition was held Jan. 23 at the office of Cheney Mason, one of the attorneys who represented Anthony in her 2011 murder trial.

The motion doesn’t say which questions Anthony refused to answer — her lawyers objected to the filing of a transcript — but it indicates that, for some, Mason invoked her Fifth Amendment rights.

Gonzalez’s attorneys argue Anthony’s criminal case in her daughter’s death is over, and there’s no basis for her to refuse questions. They want a U.S. bankruptcy judge to order her to answer.

“The criminal proceeding against [Anthony] concluded with an acquittal, and [Anthony] has failed to indicate what specific criminal proceeding she fears is likely or imminent,” the motion argues.

The motion is the latest twist in the ongoing legal wrangling surrounding Anthony’s Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Gonzalez filed a complaint last year objecting to Anthony’s bankruptcy. She argues that because Anthony was “willful and malicious” in damaging her reputation, her defamation suit should survive.

Gonzalez sued after Anthony claimed that a similarly-named nanny had kidnapped her daughter, Caylee, in 2008. Authorities ultimately determined the nanny didn’t exist and the girl was dead.

Anthony was later found not guilty of murder after a high-profile trial in 2011. She has been living in hiding since.
