Two women were shot around mid-day Thursday in a residential area of Alexandria, and six nearby schools are on lockdown as a precaution in the wake of the shooting.

The victims were transported to a hospital, but their conditions are unknown at this time. It’s unclear what led to the shooting, which happened in the 2400 block of Ridge Road Drive.

News4’s Jackie Bensen reported a heavy police presence in the area around 12:20 p.m.

Alexandria City Public Schools said around 12:40 p.m. that six schools are on lockdock as a precaution. All students and staff are safe, school officials said on Twitter.

One locked-down school is George Mason Elementary, which is located several blocks away from the scene, in the 2600 block of Cameron Mills Road.
