Two women were shot around mid-day Thursday in a residential area of Alexandria, and six nearby schools are on lockdown as a precaution in the wake of the shooting.
The victims were transported to a hospital, but their conditions are unknown at this time. It’s unclear what led to the shooting, which happened in the 2400 block of Ridge Road Drive.
News4’s Jackie Bensen reported a heavy police presence in the area around 12:20 p.m.
Alexandria City Public Schools said around 12:40 p.m. that six schools are on lockdock as a precaution. All students and staff are safe, school officials said on Twitter.
One locked-down school is George Mason Elementary, which is located several blocks away from the scene, in the 2600 block of Cameron Mills Road.
NBC Washington is working to learn the names of the other five schools.
